This presentation focuses on Canada’s implementation of Article 12 in the CRPD, which states that people with disabilities have the right to enjoy legal capacity and obligates countries that have ratified the agreement to provide people with the supports they may require in exercising their legal capacity. The presentation will describe a national project on communication and legal capacity, the role that speech-language pathologists may play in providing communication supports and, if required, supports to assist trusted people in helping individuals to make decisions in critical contexts such as health care, legal and financial services.
