Feeding and swallowing problems affect up to 80% of children with developmental difficulties across Canada. To support clinicians working in dysphagia, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital’s clinical and knowledge translation teams developed an evidence-based clinician handbook. This practical guide combines research and clinical expertise in a multidisciplinary framework to address feeding and swallowing issues. Using the framework and the handbook as tools that can be utilized in all practice settings, this workshop will focus on assessment and treatment strategies for the community clinician.
- Discuss key elements of a multidisciplinary and tiered framework for pediatric feeding and swallowing
- Demonstrate how to apply the online handbook to clinical practice
- Identify the important components of a feeding and swallowing assessment, including medical, nutrition, swallowing, positioning, skill development and efficiency aspects and where to access further information using the handbook
- Discuss practical intervention strategies to address feeding and swallowing problems in children with special needs and where to access further information using the handbook
Rebecca Perlin is the speech-language pathologist on the Feeding Clinic team at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. She has a special interest in the development of feeding skills and the management of feeding/swallowing difficulties in children with special needs, as well as consulting regularly with families, community clinicians and school personnel. Rebecca was recently a member of the SAC Current Clinical Issues in Dysphagia Practice in Canada Ad Hoc Committee.
