Level: Introductory (Assumes little or no familiarity with the literature and professional practice within the areas covered.)

Over the past 40 years, researchers in health psychology have examined the role of social support on health outcomes and found that the availability of social support is a powerful factor influencing outcomes across a number of health conditions. While social support has been investigated in other areas of health research, relatively little is known about the relationship between social support and outcomes in audiology. This presentation will provide an overview of the social costs of impaired hearing and the protective benefits of social support.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to describe several ways in which social factors are relevant for audiology.
