Level: Introductory (Assumes that the participant has little or no familiarity with the literature and professional practice within the areas covered.)

Following this presentation, S-LPs, communication health assistant and students who are interested in early literacy will be able to:

  • Define emergent literacy and be able to briefly discuss relations between core oral and written language skills 
  • State what it means in research to be “at-risk for reading-related learning disabilities” 
  • Identify three on-going research issues related to early identification of risk
  • Describe three prevention strategies that can be used to promote emergent literacy in the classroom, in therapy and at home
