Full Member: a professional who holds a Clinical Master’s degree or PhD in speech-language pathology or audiology from an accredited Canadian program, or registered with a provincial regulatory body
Internationally educated speech-language pathologists and audiologists are also welcome to join SAC.

Reduced Hours Member:
This membership category is intended for members whose employment is temporarily reduced due to circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave or other significant reductions in workload while continuing to access professional liability insurance (PLI), certification and other member benefits.
Members must complete an annual attestation confirming their eligibility. Attestations may be subject to random audit, and misrepresentation may result in loss of eligibility and repayment of fee difference.

New Practitioner: a professional who holds a Clinical Master’s degree or PhD in speech-language pathology or audiology from an accredited Canadian program, or registered with a provincial regulatory body, in the first year of practice after graduation
With the New Practitioner membership, new professionals gain access to SAC’s online resources, professional development, and discounts at a reduced rate.*
Students graduating in the current year (2026) are eligible for up to one year of free professional liability insurance.

Membership fees, whether paid in full or in installments, are non-refundable.
The SAC membership period is from January 1 to December 31, with all memberships expiring on December 31 each year. Please note that membership fees are not prorated. If applicable, Early Bird rates are reflected in the price displayed on your invoice.
Note: Installment plans are not eligible for the Early Bird discount.
Provincial Advocacy Fees in Saskatchewan and Alberta are dedicated funds that directly support advocacy initiatives in those provinces. Joint membership in British Columbia and in Newfoundland and Labrador requires payment of both SAC and provincial association fees.

Through joint membership agreements with SAC, professionals who live and practise in British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador automatically hold membership in both SAC and their provincial association (SHBC and NLASLPA, respectively). This structure ensures they receive the full benefits of each organization, combining SAC’s national advocacy, resources, and professional development with provincial representation, support, and services.

These professionals may also be referred to as Communication Disorders Assistants (CDA), Speech-Language Pathologist Assistants (SLP-A), or Audiology Assistants (Aud-A), depending on regional terminology.

The following membership types are available.
Communication Health Assistant: professionals who meet the above eligibility requirements
Reduced Hours CHA: Communication Health Assistant professionals who meet the eligibility requirements but work fewer than 800 hours* in a given year
*800 hours refers to any hours worked related to speech-language pathology or audiology, including management positions at hospitals, instructing, etc.
New Practitioner CHA: Communication Health Assistant professionals who meet the eligibility requirements in their first year of practice after graduation*
With the New Practitioner membership, new professionals gain access to SAC’s online resources, professional development, and discounts at a reduced rate.
*Proof of graduation is required.
Students currently enrolled in a Canadian or international full-time graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology, whether at the master’s or doctoral level, and students enrolled in a recognized Canadian communication health assistant program, are eligible for SAC’s free Student Associate membership.
As a bonus, students graduating in the current year are eligible for up to one year of free professional liability insurance!
*Proof of enrollment for the current academic year is required.
Affiliate Associate: a professional in related fields, and international professionals who are not currently practicing in Canada, but wish to access SAC resources and networking opportunities
Affiliate Associates receive access to selected SAC communications, resources and events at member rates. They are not eligible for professional liability insurance (PLI) discounts, certification, directory listings, or voting rights.

SAC members who are transitioning into retirement can maintain their connection to the profession by becoming Retired Associates. Continue to enjoy access to SAC’s valuable resources, webinars, events, and member benefits.
You can contribute to the profession by volunteering on committees and offering mentorship to the next generation of professionals. After 10 years as a Retired Associate, your membership becomes free, and you are no longer required to pay any membership fees.
