Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) is a form of hearing loss that encompasses a lot of uncertainty. The cause, prognosis, and treatment recommendations can all be difficult to determine. This is particularly true for ANSD that is identified in neonates through newborn hearing screening. Strategies to approach the questions which are of importance to clinicians, parents and others caring for children with ANSD are presented, focusing on an understanding of how different causes might impact outcome and the requirement for habilitation.
