High-level sound damages hearing due to both the sound level and the time of sound exposure. This combination of level, measured over time, is the “sound dose” (also known as “noise dose”). This presentation will focus on how to measure (or at least estimate) the sound dose from recreational sound exposures and apply such measures to intervention recommendations. These intervention recommendations include fitting with custom devices (earplugs, custom headphones) and verifying the performance of these devices.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the relative risk of noise-induced hearing loss from various recreational activities.
- Recommend strategies to lessen risk for noise-induced hearing loss, including prescriptively recommending a level of attenuation of musicians’ earplugs.
- Follow a clinical protocol to verify and validate hearing loss prevention efforts.
