Pediatric Cochlear Implant Update 2018: Stimulating Auditory Systems and the Professionals Who Care for Them (2018)

Présenté par Vicky Papaioannou, M. Cl. Sc.

Cochlear implants have become significantly more sophisticated since single-channel devices were implanted in the 1970s. The progress in this area of practice is astounding, especially considering that the first child was not implanted until 1985.

The evolution of cochlear implant technology and the professional skills to support it are not slowing down. These rapid changes make it difficult to stay abreast of the latest technologies and candidacy requirements — even for professionals working solely with pediatric cochlear implants. Earlier this year, SAC released an updated position paper on cochlear implants in children to assist members and associates in this exciting area of practice. This webinar will provide an overview of pediatric implantation and the updated position paper.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • become familiar with the SAC Position Paper on Cochlear Implants in Children;
  • be able to list pediatric cochlear implant criteria;
  • be able to discuss the basics of cochlear implants with patients/families; and
  • be able to discuss trends in pediatric implantation.
