Literacy Champions: The Role of SLPs in Language, Literacy and Mental Health (2024)

Présenté par Vibhuti Jethava, MHSc, Reg. CASLPO, S-LP(C)

Language and literacy are protective factors for mental health across the lifespan, facilitating academic engagement and social-emotional well-being and participation in meaningful employment. Children who experience early adversity, marginalization and structural inequality are at a marked disadvantage for making the transition to literacy. Speech-language pathologists have a critical role to play in supporting the language and literacy development of these vulnerable children and youth but are often left out of these conversations and services related to mental health. In this talk, the presenter will share the evidence on the links between language, literacy and mental health as well as best practices based on her clinical work at one of Ontario’s largest children’s mental health day treatment programs.
