Language Development in Children from Immigrant and Refugee Backgrounds: What Does it Look Like and Why Does it Matter? (2020)

S-LPs in Canada have child L2 learners on their caseloads. Yet, available assessments were created with monolingual children. This raises many challenging questions: What does typical language development look like for child L2 learners? How can atypical language be identified? 

Learning Objectives

1. Identify typical and atypical patterns of L2 development.
2. Recognize overlap between the language of children who are typical L2 learners and of children who are monolingual speakers with developmental language disorder (DLD).
3. Review best practices for assessing child L2 learners.
4. Become familiar with alternative norms for assessment.
