The World Health Organization reports that cognitive decline poses one of the greatest global challenges for health and social care in the 21st century. Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia were the second leading cause of death in the United States in 2019. So, when the Lancet reported hearing loss as the number one modifiable risk factor for the prevention of dementia, it identified audiologists as key players in the fight against the reduction and prevention of dementia. The discussion includes identification of the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline, evidence-based screening tools available for implementation within your practice, considerations for implementation, the impact of identification for guiding appropriate referrals, and utilization of findings for effective audiological and rehabilitative management.
