This webinar will provide a starting point for speech-language pathologists providing service to those for whom post-COVID condition (or Long COVID) is a primary diagnosis or comorbidity. This is a new area of practice, and learning is ongoing, but patterns are emerging. Because of some of the health conditions often associated with PCC, as well as an unpredictable course of recovery, a traditional graded rehab approach may not be appropriate. S-LPs treating those with PCC may need to draw on knowledge from other disorder areas.
Learning Objectives
- Define PCC; describe some of the associated health conditions and their relevance for S-LP intervention (e.g. dysautonomia, fatigue, post-exertional malaise, respiratory symptoms).
- Describe common cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing disorders associated with PCC in both hospitalized and never-hospitalized individuals.
- Describe the evolving mixed model of S-LP service delivery in the multidisciplinary Providence Healthcare clinic: group therapeutic education and individual sessions.
- Highlight key psychosocial factors relevant to S-LPs providing service in this area, including the relatively young age and pre-illness activity and participation levels of many individuals living with PCC.
- Provide participants with sources of reliable and up-to-date information and research on PCC.
