It is widely known that childhood trauma can significantly impact child development and life-long health. Among the various impacts that have been demonstrated, research shows a strong negative association between trauma and communication development. Despite this growing body of research and the reality that speech-language pathology (S-LP) practitioners are frequently working with children they know have experienced trauma early in life, many S-LP practitioners report several training and practice needs to confidently and effectively incorporate trauma into their practice. What is considered trauma in our clients? Why do these experiences impact communication development? Why do they sometimes not? Why is our involvement and ability to take a trauma-informed lens to our practice so important? And how do we respond?
