Parents play a key role in a child’s early speech-language development, and for a child showing delays in communication, parent engagement is critical to their progress. Parent coaching is a process whereby speech-language pathologists and parents participate in a collaborative relationship to support a child’s communication development. Parent coaching has been found to increase parent engagement as well as improve parent knowledge, confidence and satisfaction. In addition, children develop new skills and show improved generalization and maintenance of skills. Parent coaching is an example of an evidence-based parent-mediated intervention (PMI) model.
