Communications Specialist

Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) is a national non-profit association that represents over 6,800 communication health professionals (speech-language pathologists, audiologists and communication health assistants). We are currently seeking a talented and creative Communications Specialist to join our team.

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

The successful candidate will be an SAC brand champion who is passionate about telling compelling stories — through word and imagery — that elevate the profile of the association and its member professions.

Supporting the Manager of Communications and Marketing, and in collaboration with the rest of SAC’s communications team, you will develop creative and effective content and materials that will help increase member and associate engagement. You will be given challenging projects, a high level of responsibility and opportunities to further your knowledge and skills. This position will allow you to enhance your professional experience in many areas of communications, public relations and marketing.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Writing

This position is ideal for someone who loves to write! As SAC’s Communications Specialist, you will be one of the association’s main writers, responsible for drafting e-communications, newsletters, advocacy materials, speeches, website content, etc. 

Speech and Hearing Month

As SAC’s Communications Specialist, you will lead the planning, execution and evaluation of SAC’s annual Speech and Hearing Month Campaign. You will develop the communications plan and work with the content experts to develop public awareness posters and info sheets. In leading this annual campaign, you will also manage media outreach and the campaign website.

Website Management

In addition to managing the Speech and Hearing Month website, you will be responsible for managing the SAC website. You will collaborate regularly with SAC staff to ensure that the content is engaging and accurate. You will stay on top of the latest trends and best practices and propose website changes to improve user experience

Additional Responsibilities

As SAC’s Communications Specialist, you will also be responsible for managing the department’s planning calendar, email calendar as well as various production schedules. You will work closely with the Manager of Communications & Marketing to ensure that all communications initiatives are strategic, well-planned, well-executed and completed on-time and on-budget.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional work experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or related.
  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary degree or diploma in a field that relates to communications
  • Strong working knowledge of content management systems, HTML, and CSS
  • Good knowledge of printing/publishing procedures and standards
  • Good knowledge of Mailchimp, Survey Monkey and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience working in a medium (15-person) not-for-profit environment is an asset

                                                                                                                            

 

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

Writing Skills — Superior writing and editing skills (sound knowledge of Canadian Press style)

Communication Skills Strong interpersonal, organizational and public relations skills with a proven ability to communicate clearly to a broad range of stakeholders

Computer Skills Excellent computer skills with working knowledge of Adobe products (particularly InDesign and Photoshop), Microsoft Office products and website content management systems

Creativity Excellent knowledge of the elements and principles of good graphic design. Ability to come up with innovative and compelling ideas for SAC’s collateral

Project Management Skills — Ability to organize comprehensive work-back schedules and ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget

Time Management Skills — Ability to balance competing priorities and multiple projects while adhering to strict deadlines

Problem Solving Works well with fellow team members to problem solve situations. Meets challenges with resourcefulness and generates suggestions for improving work

Initiative — Volunteers readily and is always seeking ways to foster self-development and growth. Sets and achieves challenging goals

Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset for this position.
