Clinical Specialist, Speech Language Pathology

Permanent Full Time – Prince George, BC

This position is designated as a Clinical Specialist focused on advanced competencies within speech language pathology’s scope of practice targeted to adults living in residential care. As part of a collaborative team acting as a regional resource for residential care, this position will initially be responsible for the implementation, evaluation and sustainability of an interprofessional eating, drinking, and swallowing (EDS) management strategy for individuals living in residential care. The role will also specialize in the swallowing, communication and cognitive concerns of adults in residential care from a speech pathology perspective. The resource team operates under a collaborative reporting structure, with direct administrative reporting to the professional practice lead (rehabilitation), and an oversight reporting relationship with a Regional Dysphagia Services Steering Committee.

The incumbent works collaboratively within and external to the Resource Team in fulfilling the deliverables of the Northern Health Dysphagia Management Project Charter and for implementation of the Interprofessional Dysphagia Framework. This includes program planning and infrastructure development; coordination and evaluation of services and the model of delivery; building capacity and support for the frontline workforce; and engagement of operational leaders and local community partners. As part of this inter-professional Resource Team, the incumbent will develop, promote and disseminate clinical practice guidelines and supporting toolkits, create education, teaching and training strategies, and develop support infrastructures, including a communication and change management strategy, to ensure full continuum implementation of EDS management. They will also act as a regional resource for dysphagia consultation services and provide clinical expertise in the evaluation and treatment of complex cases. In partnership with organizational leaders and directors, future priority areas of focus for supporting best practices in residential care will be identified and implemented through the efforts of this Resource Team.

 

The successful applicant will have

  • Current or eligible for registration with the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia.
  • Master’s level education in a relevant discipline or equivalent level of education and training focused on dysphasia management, education and/or leadership.
  • Advanced Competency Certification for instrumental evaluation for swallowing disorders in adults, post graduate course in the interprofessional management of eating, drinking and swallowing disorders in the adult population, as outlined by the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC.
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years related experience in the practice areas of dysphagia management, gerontology and related complex care services for seniors.
  • Demonstrated teaching, supervisory/mentoring experience for a range of health care providers.
