Abstract

We’ll focus on the power of relationships in mentoring and supervising support personnel, graduate clinicians and new or seasoned professionals. We will emphasize creating a solid foundation for giving and receiving feedback. We’ll consider differences between settings and highlight a range of evidence-based success strategies.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key roles and responsibilities unique to teaching and supervising support personnel, graduate clinicians and new or seasoned professionals.
  • Articulate the principle concepts of effective feedback and evaluation.
  • Identify the competencies needed to be an effective clinical educator and supervisor who supports learning and professional growth.
  • Identify key external forces that will impact our learning, teaching and working environment.
  • Identify resources that will assist effective clinical education and supervision across work settings.

Presenter Biography

Nancy Alarcon, M.Sc., CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS is a Principal Lecturer in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington and Director of the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic where she has mentored over 400 graduate students.  Her clinical expertise includes clinical education and neurologic communication disorders.
